TURKEY’S ERDOGAN NOW FACING ECONOMIC CRISIS 4-0-2018

It is a proven fact that economic crisis can lead to the start of a shooting war. It is also true a political crisis can have the same result. Syria is now in a state of complete chaos. The airstrikes, apparently from Israel, have upped the ante. The Russian military response, firing cruise missiles on Syria ISIS targets has Syria is now in play on multiple levels, and with multiple players, Iran, Hezzbollah, Assad Junior, Russia, the US led Coalition, the Kurds and Turkey. Of them all, it is Erdogan’s brazen moves that are setting in motion the ongoing disaster in Syria.

Erdogan is a man on a mission. The mission is the restoration of the historical Ottoman Empire. The real danger in Syria is all the other players are making political and military decisions based on military and political value judgments. In the case of Erdogan, this is a very dangerous, and potentially fatal, thing to do. Erdogan is taking action based on spiritual and religious values, and not military or political values. As such, he is moving to the beat of another drummer than everybody else.

Finally, Erdgoan is now, after full consolidating all political and military power in Turkey, faced with an economic crisis. It is my belief that Erdogan’s economic crisis will result in military action designed to divert the people of Turkey’s attention away from their collapsing Lira. It should be obvious that Erdogan can’t wave a wand and make his economic crisis go away. Erdogan will do the next best thing, which is to unleash his military on the Kurds, and on his “enemies.”

Turkish Lira Tumbles To Record Low After Erdogan Promise To “Rescue Investors From High Rates”

The Turkish Lira accelerated its recent demise today – breaking below two critical thresholds – as President Erdogan rebuffed investor calls for higher rates to tamp down excess growth (inflation), commenting that they “are speaking out of jealousy.”

nvestors have called for higher interest rates to moderate an economy they say is overheating, but Turkey’s responded instead with stimulus measures aimed at boosting growth.

“There isn’t much use, from a disinflation perspective, if any tightening by the central bank will lead the government to become even more aggressive via fiscal measures,” Kaan Nazli, a strategist at Neuberger Berman Group, said by email.

And Erdogan’s comments today have sparked fresh selling in the Lira…

ERDOGAN WITH HORNS 4-9-2018.jpg

Those who say Turkey’s growth rate is excessive are speaking out of jealousy, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says in a speech announcing new investment incentives in Ankara.

Erdogan says that the Turkish growth rate is creating a more just income distribution, and hopes that unemployment will drop below 10% soon.

Growth means investment. Investment means employment, production, technology, exports and prosperity, Erdogan says.

“Without bringing interest rates down, can these investments be done? We’re talking about an investment-support incentive system, and here, first of all, we need to save investors from these high interest rates”

Above 5.00 against the Euro for the first time ever and above 4.00 versus the dollar for the first time ever…

This mismanagement of the currency leads to a loss of confidence in the purchasing power of the lira which is hard to cure,” said Lutz Roehmeyer, who helps oversee about $14 billion at Landesbank Berlin Investment GmbH. “Only massive one-off hikes can heal this situation, which is of course not popular as it slows the economy.”

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SYRIA PART TWO 3-17-2018

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SYRIA PART TWO

BY DOUG MCINTOSH 3-14-2018

Events in Syria are now collapsing into chaos, with the situation changing on an hourly basis it seems. Since I wrote these essays, Russia has essentially thrown down the gauntlet and made clear statements related to any further US intervention in Syria. Turkey is now bombing inside both Iraq and Syria. Assad Junior is moving both regular Syrian military forces, as well as his armed miltia to directly confront Turkey when it moves towards Manjbi after the genocide is complete in Afrin. Multiple reports indicate the Al Qaida, ISIS, and even Chinese Uighr Muslims in Erdogan’s “milita forces,” are raping and murdering their way through conquered Kurdish villages.

In my first essay I dealt with the general historical context of modern Syria, and also listed various factors that resulted in the current Syrian civil war scenario. In this second essay, I will deal with Turkey’s leader Erdogan and his invasion of Syria, why he did it, and what he wants out of it. I will also deal with who is doing what, and why they are doing it.

First, my readers need to understand one fact above all else. The one fact is, in my opinion, Turkey’s leader, Erdogan is bat poop crazy. The reason I make this rather harsh statement is Erdogan is a man who thinks he is on a mission from God/Allah. The mission is to restore the historical Ottoman Empire. However crazy we think this is, I assure you Erdogan is totally committed to this Ottoman Imperial restoration. Now, when I am talking about a “restored Ottoman Empire,” I am really talking about Erdogan’s vision, and the actions he is taking to do it. The historical Ottoman Empire was based in Turkey and eventually came to be very powerful. It is true that the Ottoman Empire by 1917 came to control Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia as we call them today. It is also true that the term, “Gate of Vienna,” refer to the Ottoman Empire attacking the Hapsburg Empire in 1683. The date September 11th is related to this attack. The Ottomans also conquered Yugoslavia. The reason for the 1998 conflict between NATO forces and the Serbs can be drawn in a direct line to Ottoman actions. Kosovo was a problem that began with a battle in 1300, and ended with a battle in 1998. In Europe past is present and current problems all have historical roots. It is the same thing in the Middle East, as the US has found to its sorrow. So, my main point is in Erdogan we have a man who has a vision, and that vision involves restoring the Ottoman Empire, presumably to its greatest extent. It is that vision, dear reader that is going to shake the entire Middle East to its core. It is that vision that resulted in Turkey invading Northern Syria. Erdogan says he is invading Syria to prevent “Kurdish terrorists,” from creating an independent Kurdish state in Syria that threatens Turkey. In reality, his true goal is to annex Syria into his restored Ottoman Empire. Erdogan is also using “proxy forces,” combined with regular Turkish military units, to do so. Another key fact in the entire Syrian Civil War scenario is the use of proxy forces. Everybody in Syria, the Russians, the Americans, NATO, and Iran are using proxies as pawns in the Great Game. The reason is to exhibit the famous statement, “plausible denial,” I also think both NATO and the USA got burned by their proxy forces, especially by the Al Qaida and ISIS forces. At any rate, in order to understand what is now going on in Syria, you need to understand that various agendas are now in play. Turkey’s agenda is to annex Northern Syria, with the idea they will eventually incorporate all of Syria into Turkey. Further, all of Erdogan’s actions must be viewed as trying to achieve his goal of a restored Ottoman Empire.

In order to do that, Erdogan is quite willing to roll the dice. He is willing to take great risks. The reason being he understands that if he is truly trying to restore the historical Ottoman Empire, which he is, then he must risk all. Erdogan is quite willing to risk his membership in NATO. He is quite willing to risk a broader war in Syria. He is quite willing to fight the USA, and Assad Junior, and Iran, and even Russia. Erdogan is even making noises about invading a fellow NATO member Greece. Like I said, whatever anybody thinks about Erdogan, and I really do think he is Bat Poop Crazy, the man has a vision. He thinks this vision comes from God/Allah and he is willing to do what it takes to implement that vision. The fact he may trigger a regional Middle East War, or unleash a level of chaos a sane man would back off from, well Erdogan simply doesn’t care at this point. He may go down in flames, and he may crash and burn the entire Middle East, but he is going to try for the brass ring, whatever the results are.

Erdogan has stated he plans to conquer Afrin. The fact he may unleash a Kurdish massacre doesn’t bother him. The fact his proxy forces are a group of Al Qaida, ISIS, and assorted Turkish thugs doesn’t bother him. If they rape, and kill and destroy Kurds in Syria, this doesn’t concern him. He is going to take Afrin. He is going to do what it takes to do so, and the consequences be damned. If Erdogan has to leave piles of Kurdish corpses, including Kurdish civilians, he will do that. Erdogan is going to create a Turkish “sphere of influence” covering his border with Syria, from the Med in the west, to the Euphrates in the east. Once he does that, he will then directly engage Assad Junior and his forces, likely backed by Russia. When Erdogan turns east from Afrin, he will attack Manjbi, which is where the US forces are. And when Erdogan does that, he will shatter NATO, unleash a regional war, and force the USA to engage him in self-defense.

I think this is the general context of what Turkey is now doing in Syria. They clearly intend to take over all of Syria, and if they have to fight everybody else to do so, then Erdogan will do just that. Of course, that brings us to the cold, hard reality of exactly what that means. Turkey has so far  avoided direct combat with Assad Junior’s military forces. The reason being Assad Junior has cynically taken advantage of Turkey’s invasion to settle some scores of his own.

Syria, as the situation is on March 14,Th 2018 is a shattered country. If the military mission of any military is to protect the lives and property of its citizens, as well as the territorial integrity of the state, then Assad Junior has failed miserably. The pre-civil war borders of Syria no longer exist. This one fact now determines all actions Assad Junior is now taking, and will take in the future. You see, dear reader, Assad Junior is also a man on a mission. His mission is to restore the pre-civil war borders of Syria. It is this fundamental conflict between a Turkish leader, who wants to annex Syria, and a Syrian leader who wants to restore Syria, that will unleash the firestorm I am predicting. Assad Junior is now engaged in a massive effort, some 15,000 combat veteran ground forces, with Russian air support, to retake his capital city of Damascus. He is attacking the eastern suburbs of Damascus and plans to exert control over it. Assad Junior is also attacking west of the Turkish forces in Northern Syria in order to reclaim the area between Afrin/Aleppo and the Med. He is also attacking east to the Euphrates River to restore the original Syrian and Iraq border. Finally, he is attacking south, both east and west in order to restore his border with Israel, on the Golan Heights, and with Jordan. While Erdogan has been conquering much of Northern Syria, Assad Junior has been restoring his borders to the east, to the northwest, and to the southeast and southwest. Once that is completed, Assad Junior is going to go after the Turks in the north. When that happens, all hell is going to break out, and all the various players are going to get sucked into the free for all.

I am saying that the current context of the entire “Syrian situation,” is based on a Turkish leader, Erdogan, who is trying to annex Northern Syria, and eventually all of Syria, into his restored Ottoman Empire. He is facing Assad Junior who is trying to restore the original, pre 2011 Syrian borders, It is this conflict, in my opinion, that will define what is going to happen in Syria over the next few weeks and months. It is the definitive example of being between a rock and a hard place. Syria, and eventually the entire world, is going to impale itself on an Erdogan who seeks to conquer Syria, and an Assad Junior who seeks to prevent that conquest. Of course, Israel and Jerusalem, as well as Iran and Hezzbollah will also be thrown into that toxic mix of competing visions for Syria. In order to explain that, I would require another essay, so I will just mention it and move on.

We are now on the verge of the Syrian abyss. The two main players are Assad Junior, the leader of Syria, and Erdogan, the leader of Turkey. The reason I am predicting disaster is because Russia, the USA, NATO, Iran and Hezzbollah, the Kurds, and eventually Israel will all get sucked into the mess. The reason being that having proxies is a two edged sword. The reason the “big boys” like proxies is they can be pushed out of the airplane at 30,000 feet with nobody the wiser. The reason the “big boys,” hate proxies is they can storm the pilot’s cabin and crash the plane. You roll the dice, and you takes your chances.

I think it is clear that soon Assad Junior will have to respond, as in military response, as in shooting at the Turks. I think it is clear Turkey will start shooting back when that happens. At that point, delusional fanatic that he is, Erdogan will request NATO combat intervention, like under the famous clause 5. When that happens, the result will either be the collapse of the NATO military alliance, or direct combat between both NATO forces, and US forces with Assad Junior. Following my thought stream here, we come to a situation where that will result in Assad junior’s allies; namely, Iran, Hezzbollah, and Russia coming to his aid. Putin has made it very, very clear, in his statements on the British response to the “murder” of the Russian dissidents, he will brook no fecal material. Putin has further stated very plainly he not only has a credible nuclear force, but he is quite willing to use it. Finally, Putin has made it quite clear that he fully supports a unified, and that is a key word, unified, Syria. Again, a unified Syria is a Syria restored to its pre-civil war borders, and under the control of Assad junior. This puts Russia in direct opposition to Turkey, the EU, NATO and the USA, who want to partition Syria. Well, Vlad the Impaler is saying he won’t go for that, and intends to make sure that doesn’t happen, and will use military force to prevent it. Putin’s General made the statement that any further attacks on Damascus by anybody, US coalition forces, Israel, or Turkey will be met with force, especially if they threaten Russian lives I wonder why the US coalition, when they bombed the Russian mercs, thought they would get a pass on it. Putin is playing a deep game here in Syria. He views Syria in the context of the NATO betrayal when the former Soviet Union collapsed. The entire Syrian situation must also be viewed in the context of NATO’s expansion to the east. NATO is now deploying combat troops directly on the Russian borders with the Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Further, NATO has deployed troops to Poland, put missile batteries in Romania, and the final insult of putting US Naval ships into the Black Sea. Putin regards the Black Sea as not the Romans “mare nostrum, or our sea, but as a Russian bath tub. Of all the things that NATO has done to enrage Moscow, sending in US fleet destroyers to insolently cruise around next to the Russian Black Sea Fleet, is the worst by far. So, on the edges of the “Syrian Situation,” we have the NATO eastward deployment situation, along with the Black Sea situation, all of which Putin views in terms of the “Ukrainian situation”. The reason I am saying the “Syrian situation’ is so bad, is because it is in Syria where all the various threads of Russian, US and NATO confrontation come together. Syria is the sword upon which all the players are going to eventually impale themselves, whether they want to or not.

The bottom line of all this scheming, deploying and posturing is we may, similar to World War One, simply stumble into a war. Whatever the various players are planning for, and however they intend things to turn out, we are now in the Twilight zone, or perhaps we should think in terms of the famous Mr. Murphy. Mr. Murphy is the reality that everything that can go wrong will go wrong. Syria is now beyond intentions, or expected results in my opinion. I think things are now in play that once unleashed take on a life of their own.

Finally, the Kurds are involved. The thing my readers need to understand is that the Kurds are not a monolithic group. The “Kurds” are divided into several competing groups, all with different ideologies, agendas and goals. The Kurds now in Afrin are, more or less, Marxists. They derive from a Kurdish leader now in a Turkish prison, and are dedicated to the creation of a Kurdish state inside of Turkey. Erdogan does have reasonable concerns about “Kurdish terrorists.” Unfortunately, Erdogan is quite willing to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The Kurds number roughly 50 million worldwide. The Kurds live in Iran, Northern Iraq, Southeastern Turkey, and Syria among other places. The Kurds also live in Europe, with one million in Germany alone. It is almost certain, and has in fact already happened with the Turkish mosques being attacked in Berlin, that the Turkish and Kurdish conflict centered in Northern Syria will spread to Europe first, and eventually to the USA, which also has some Kurds living here. The next phase of the Syrian conflict has gone from “over there,” to “over here.”

At any rate, a history of the Kurds is beyond the scope of this essay. I will make the point that the USA has betrayed the Kurds twice. The first time, under the famous war criminal Henry Kissinger, was when we brokered a deal between Saddam and the Iranian Shah in 1975. We pulled our support for them, betrayed and abandoned them, and let Saddam kill them in droves. The second betrayal was in 1991 after Desert Storm. Again, we betrayed, and then abandoned both the Kurds and the Shia. We led them on, got an armed uprising out of them, and then let Saddam’s helicopter gunships machine gun, and rocket them without let up. So, the Kurds, even though we used them as proxies to fight ISIS, never really trusted us. The result was that when Turkey invaded Northern Syria on January 20th, 2018, the Kurds immediately ceased fighting ISIS, and started moving to defend Afrin. Of course, once Erdogan got wind of thousands of armed, combat veteran Kurdish Peshmerga, heading from Eastern Syria, and Aleppo to Afrin, he started screaming at both the USA and its coalition, and NATO to stop them. Again, everything is now in play. When people ask me what one of the results of Erdogan’s invasion of Syria was, I tell them it gave ISIS a second chance. ISIS is now expanding its Euphrates River zone because the fight against it has ceased, and the reason for that is the Kurds left for Afrin, and the reason they did that was Erdogan plans to conquer it, and likely, or at least his Al Qaida and ISIS proxy troops plan to, murder and rape all the Kurds, civilian or not, they can find. Like I said, current events in Syria are like a rock thrown into a pond. You never really quite know how far the ripples will spread. One would not think that Turkey invading Syria would result in the salvation of ISIS, but it has.

Finally, I am saying that whatever the players intend for Syria, the 2nd law of Thermodynamics, the one called Entropy, is now fully in play. Entropy states that the tendency is for decay. I call it the teenager’s room syndrome. One of the reasons I personally find the theory of Evolution to be so ridiculous is because it violates Entropy. Entropy states that if you clean a teenager’s room, within one week it will look like a cyclone hit it. Evolution states not only will the teenager’s room not decay, it will evolve. Evolution is like reducing a Ford Truck to its individual parts, throwing it into a garage and then expecting it to put itself back together. /The ideal is a violation of natural science and simply ridiculous. Syria is now in the exact same situation. It will be put together again in my opinion. It will be Assad Junior, backed by Russia, Iran and Hezzbollah who will do it. The Kurds, well the Kurds will get screwed again, as they usually are, although I think they will land on their feet, more or less.

RUSSIA SENDING IN ARMOR AND MECH INFANTRY TO ASSAD JUNIOR 3-6-2018

We are now right on the verge of the final phase in the Syrian civil war. Within the next two weeks, and certainly no later than the end of March,  Syria is going to explode into a regional war involving all the current players.

ONE: Russia is now deploying its second shipload of armor to Syria this year. The link is here.

https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/video-russian-tank-carrying-naval-transport-heads-syria-fully-loaded/

By Andrew Illingworth – 06/03/2018

BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:40 A.M.) – The Russian military is sending another batch of vehicles and heavy weapons to Syria in order to further bolster the Arab republic’s armed forces.

On Monday, observers in the Bosphorus Strait spotted and filmed the Mediterranean-bound journey of a Russian Navy Tapir-class LST (Landing Ship Tank) sealifter.

Identified more specifically as Orsk 148, the naval cargo ship is noted by sources to be inbound to the Syrian port city of Tartus – its second such deployment since the beginning of 2018.

Whilst a number of military trucks were spotted above deck, it is worth noting that the true cargo-carrying capacity of the ship is hidden inside deceptively spacious storage areas within the vessel itself.

Tapir-class LSTs are capable of carrying up to twenty main battle tanks (or 40 infantry fighting vehicles).

TWO: Turkey is now in the final phase, as in the next 3 to 7 days, of storming Afrin itself. The link is here.

https://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2018/03/turkey-operation-syria-afrin-jindires.html

“The Turkish strategy is to lay siege to Afrin and to cut off the connection to Nubl and Zahra,” the SDF commander, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Al-Monitor.

Forces loyal to the Syrian regime have reportedly been deployed in support of the YPG from the mainly Shiite villages of Nubl and Zahra. Haberturk, a mainstream news channel, broadcast footage shot from Hatay, on the Turkish side of the border, of Turkish jets bombing Jindires. Large plumes of brown smoke rose from a hilltop that the channel said was near Jindires. Haberturk reported that the purpose of the strikes was to “soften” resistance before Turkish-led ground forces moved into the town itself.

Commentators believe that the battle for Jindires marks a shift from rural to urban warfare in Turkey’s Operation Olive Branch — a move that will prove hugely challenging. Jindires needs to be taken if Turkish-led forces are to close in on Afrin proper. Sedat Ergin, a veteran columnist for Hurriyet, wrote that Jindires “spreads out over a large area … [and] clashes with terrorist groups in a residential area with civilians carry more risks and difficulties than ones in the countryside.”

According to Istanbul-based think tank the Center for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies (EDAM), the Turkish “gendarmerie and police special operations units, which are the urban warfare and counterterrorism elite of the Turkish security forces, are being deployed to the areas of operation.” EDAM added that the “use of … civilians as human shield[s]” on behalf of the YPG and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) is “highly problematic.”

THREE: KURDISH COMBAT VETERAN FORCES ARE BEING REDEPLOYED FROM BOTH SYRIAN AND US COALITION MISSIONS TO REINFORCE AFRIN. SOME 5,000 KURDISH FIGHTERS ARE NOW INBOUND TO AFRIN OVER THE NEXT WEEK OR SO.

THE LINK IS HERE. AND HERE.

US-backed Kurdish forces say they are redeploying fighters from fronts against the Islamic State group in eastern Syria to the Kurdish-controlled enclave of Afrin in the northwest to shore up Kurdish fighters battling a Turkish offensive.

The Kurdish Rudaw news agency quotes Abu Omar al-Idilbi, a spokesman for Arab militias within the Syrian Democratic Forces as saying that 1,700 fighters will be redeployed from Deir el-Zour and other active fronts with IS.

WAR DRUMS IN THE DISTANCE 3-1-2018

When World War Three actually breaks out, which could be any day now, nobody will be able to say they were surprised. It isn’t like Erdogan, or Assad Junior, or Vlad the Impaler, ie Putin, or Israel, or Iran, or Hezzbollah hasn’t given clear indications the balloon is about to go up. We may be appalled. We may be stunned. We may be terrified. We will not be unaware of the looming crisis, at least if you have been reading my little “doomer porn blog.” At any rate, Erdogan has now done something truly amazing in both the military and diplomatic sphere. Erdogan has now completely surrounded Turkey with armed, angry enemies. The level of arrogance and incompetence required to do that is, well truly amazing in its scope. Never has one leader, Erdogan, annoyed so many nations, so much, and with such a potentially devastating effect.

Erdogan now faces Urkaine and Russia to the north. Erdogan now faces Armenia to his East. Erdogan now faces Syria to his south, including Assad Junior, the Kurds, Iran and Hezzbollah. And finally, Erdogan now faces both NATO and Greece to his west. This western threat also now includes Israel, which sent one of its military people to have a chat with Athens. I have no doubt the cargo planes full of military stuff are now landing at the Athens airport.

First, in this link below we see Erdogan has so enraged the Armenians they have cancelled the 1993 attempt at better relations. Vlad the Impaler has yet again proven he is always about three steps ahead of everybody else. Putin has expanded, deployed to a huge Armenian Air Base that is on the Turkish Armenian border.

Russia’s Staging Bases in Armenia

PUTIN DEPLOYS SU-57 STEALTH FIGHTERS TO ENGAGE US F-22 RAPTORS IN SYRIA 2-25-2018

I said at the time the US Coalition wasted those Russian mercs Putin would have a robust response. Putin has now deployed to Syria four of his most advanced stealth fighters. The Su-57 has the mission of engaging US F-22 Raptor fighters. The SU57 has the mission of shooting down our F-22 fighter jets. Well, the message is now very clear from Russia to the US coalition forces in Syria. The message is, to both Israel and the US, back off or face the consequences.

Assad Junior is moving to retake his capitol city. He is moving east to his border with Iraq, which will bring him into conflict with the US Coalition forces there. He is moving south the Jordanian and Syrian border, which will bring him into combat with the US forces stationed there. Assad Junior is moving towards the Golan Heights, which will bring him into conflict with Israel. Iran and Hezzbollah and Lebanon’s military are going to engage Israel’s F-16’s when they enter Lebanon’s airspace and use it to launch on Syrian and Iranian targets inside of Syria.

If any of you retain any illusions about just how bat poop crazy Erdogan truly is, check out this link to a video where Erdogan is telling some Turkish child she will die in combat. It is like Hitler’s awarding the Iron Cross to those 10 year old kids in 1945. The man is quite mad in my opinion.

Erdogan, well our would be Sultan of the Restored Ottoman Empire is now threatening, all at the same time, to invade NATO member Greece, crush the Kurds in Afrin, move to attack Manbji, with its American military forces stationed there, as well as go to the current Syrian and Iraqi border on the Euphrates River. Other than that, Syria is in good shape.

Russia deploys advanced stealth jets in Syria with warning aimed at Israel

Satellite images show two Su-57 at airbase in Latakia; Russian official says presence of planes a ‘message’ to neighboring states who fly aircraft into Syria ‘uninvited’

Russia has deployed two of its most advanced and sophisticated stealth jets in Syria, in a power move likely to draw US criticism, as the Pentagon expressed its alarm earlier this month over recent close calls with Russian planes in the war-torn country.

Satellite images published by Israeli company ImageSat International on Friday showed the fifth-generation jets — two Su-57 fighter aircraft — at Russia’s airbase in the coastal Syrian city of Latakia. A source in the defense ministry confirmed to RBK news agency this week that the two planes were sent to the Hmeimim base “for a test in real conditions.” The jets are said to be a potential rival to the US’s Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, which American forces use in patrols over Syria.

https://www.debka.com/russias-topline-su-57-deployed-syria-challenge-us-israeli-air-might/

Two more Russian topline Su-57 land in Syria to challenge US, Israeli air might

Government sources in Moscow reported Saturday, Feb. 24, that four fifth-generation Sukhoi-57 jet fighters are currently deployed in Syria after a second pair landed Friday.  The first two arrived on  Monday, Feb. 19 at Russia’s Khmeimim air base, along with 4 Su-35 fighters, 4 Su-25 strike aircraft and an A-50U radar command-and-control platform.

DEBKA file reported the first pair’s arrival on Friday, Feb. 23, along with this comment: This top-performance fleet raises Russia’s air strike and defense capabilities in Syria to the highest standards of any air force in the world, with enough power to take on superior US and Israeli air might in the Syrian arena. The Su-57’s weapon bays are designed to carry Russia’s new nuclear tactical X-50 air-launched cruise missile, although it is not known whether the aircraft in Syria are carrying them. DEBKA Weekly’s military sources see President Vladimir Putin’s decision to send the Su-57 fighters to Syria as substantially raising the big power stakes in Syria after the loss of dozens of Russian troops on Feb. 7 to massive US artillery and air strikes that decimated the Russian, Syrian and pro-Iranian forces crossing the Euphrates River. An American radar-invisible F-22 took part in that raid. The Russians have dubbed the Su-57 the “F-22 killer.”

It is also Russia’s response to Israel’s air offensive on Feb. 10, which targeted the shared Russian-Iranian T-4 air base near Palmyra and smashed four Iranian Revolutionary Guards forward command centers in Syria, after downing an Iranian drone. It is also seen in Moscow as a challenge for Israel’s newly acquired fifth-generation US F-35 combat aircraft.
Does Putin intend to order his mighty airborne strike force to go into battle against the US or Israel in the boiling Syrian arena? If he does, he will be launching the first contest between the most sophisticated warplanes ever devised for a test of superior might between the US and Russia and a war escalation unprecedented, even in Syria.
The very presence of the Su-57 across the border has had the instant effect of reducing the Israel air force’s freedom of action over Syria and Lebanon.

SYRIA THREATENS TO SHOOT DOWN TURKISH AIR FORCE PLANES OVER AFRIN 2-23-2018

I said that eventually, sooner rather than later, Turkey and Syria were going to get into it. Assad Junior wants his country back. Assad Junior wants his original, pre-civil war borders back, intact, and with no Turkish buffer zone, or Kurdish free state, or Iranian spheres of influence. Assad Junior has now deployed 15,000 troops, unleashed both the Syrian and Russian Air Force, as well as these uber flamethrower things, to take back his capitol city. He is also sending in his own proxy forces to assert full control over his Northern areas. He is taking back large chunks of Southern Syria, not only bordering the Golan Heights and Israel, but his borders with both Jordan and Iraq. Obviously, this will bring into armed conflict with the USA led coalition. And finally, Assad junior has now made it abundantly clear he will defend “his” airspace from anybody: the USA coalition, Israel and Turkey.

Update: Syria to shoot down Turkish fighter jets if Afrin operation launched
By Rudaw 18/1/2018

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Syrian regime is fully prepared to shoot down any Turkish fighter jets over its airspace, a senior official told reporters as he warned Ankara against any plans to launch an operation against the Kurdish-controlled city of Afrin.

“We warn that the Syrian air force has retaken its past capabilities and is fully prepared to destroy Turkish air targets in the sky of the Syrian Arab Republic,” Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad told reporters, State-run SANA new agency reported on Thursday.

He stated that If Turkey begins “military acts in Afrin,” Damascus will consider it as an “aggressive act” against Syria’s state sovereignty.

Turkey’s presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin said his country has the right to protect itself.

“Turkey has the right to take measures to protect its national security, whether it is threatened from Afrin or Manbij, by PKK, YPG or ISIS. There is no difference,” Kalin said in a press conference Thursday.

“The Turkish army has the authority to take measures without specifying time, place or manner,” he asserted, stressing that purpose of operations in Afrin is to “confront a terrorist group.”

Afrin is the westernmost canton under the control of the self-styled Kurdish enclave in northern Syria established shortly after the start of the civil war in the country in 2011.

Turkey has said they will launch an operation against the Kurdish forces in Afrin held by the People’s Protections Units (YPG).

“Afrin is special, and the northern and eastern region of the Syrian Arab Republic has always been Arab and Syrian Arab territory and will remain so,” the Syrian official stated.

Turkey has said that they will not allow a “terror corridor” on its southern borders with the Syrian Kurdistan, called Rojava. Ankara considers the YPG as an extension of the PKK, a named terrorist organization by Turkey, and the United States. YPG denies the accusations.

Earlier in the day, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters that they will coordinate their military movements with Russia, a main backer of the Syrian regime.

Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces Gen. Hulusi Akar and Hakan Fidan, head of Ankara’s intelligence agency (MIT), are to visit Russian on Thursday to discuss, among other topics, the situation in Syria, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

Afrin has come under frequent Turkish bombardment, but recently the Turkish artillery has intensified in preparations for an expected operation.

TURKEY THREATENS TO FIGHT ADVANCING SYRIAN FORCES 2-19-2018

Like I have posted over the last week or so, combat between Erdogan’s Turkish forces and militia, advancing towards the Kurdish enclave Afrin, and Assad Junior’s advancing military forces heading into the area, now appears imminent. The Syrian situation has been lurching towards total chaos for some time now. The implications of any direct combat between Syrian national forces, and Turkey’s forces are profound. It will bring in all the other players, like Iran and Hezzbollah, Russia, the USA and the coalition, as well as the Syrian Kurds. Now when that happens, all hell is going to break loose. For one thing, Turkey is a member of NATO, and may try to invoke Clause 5. Clause 5 requires military force to be used by all other NATO members to defend Turkey from Syrian forces. Russia and Iran will then engage the entire NATO alliance, or at least those members who respond to Turkey’s request for military assistance. Granted, NATO will be between the proverbial rock and a hard place. Still, Turkey will have unleashed a fundamental crisis for NATO. If NATO intervenes, it will lead to a wider Syrian war, but if they do not, it will collapse the NATO alliance once and for all.

First, we have the confirmation from official Syrian sources that the Syrian military will deploy into Afrin and defend it from Turkey and its proxies. It is a Reuters story from yesterday. The link is here.

Syrian Kurdish official: deal for Syrian army to enter Afrin

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-m…-idUSKCN1G20QB (fair use)

FEBRUARY 18, 2018 / 1:03 PM / UPDATED AN HOUR AGO Reuters Staff

BEIRUT (Reuters) – Syrian Kurdish forces and the Damascus government have reached an agreement for the Syrian army to enter the Afrin region to help repel a Turkish offensive, a senior Kurdish official told Reuters on Sunday.
Badran Jia Kurd, an adviser to the Kurdish-led administration in north Syria, said army troops will deploy along some border positions and could enter the region within the next two days.

The agreement underscores the increasingly complex situation in northern Syria where Kurdish groups, the Syrian government, rebel groups, Turkey, the United States and Russia are tangled in a complex web of enmities and alliances.

The complex relationship between the Damascus government and the Syrian Kurds, which each holds more territory than any other side in the war, will be an important element in determining the future course of the conflict.
Turkey launched an air and ground offensive last month on Syria’s Afrin region, opening a new front in the multi-sided Syrian war to target Kurdish fighters in the autonomous canton in the north.

The Kurdish YPG militia, which has received arms from the United States, has seized swathes of northern Syria from Islamic State during the conflict, and has a rival vision for the country’s future to that of the Damascus government.

But while the United States has a military presence in the much larger area of Syria the YPG and its allies control further east, it has not given any support to the YPG in Afrin.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government has had a complex relationship with the YPG during the conflict. They have mostly avoided direct conflict and both sides have at times suggested a long-term agreement between them might be possible, but they have also sometimes clashed and espouse utterly different visions for Syria’s future. Assad has said he wants to take back control of the whole country.

Jia Kurd said the agreement that had been reached with Damascus was purely military and that no wider political arrangements had been made yet.

“When it comes to the political and administrative matters in the region, it will be agreed upon with Damascus in the later stages through direct negotiations and discussions,” he said.

He added that there was opposition to the deal that could prevent it being implemented: “We don’t know to what extent these understandings will last because there are sides that are not satisfied and want to make (the understandings) fail.”

Syrian TV: Pro-government forces to enter Kurdish enclave

Associated Press

BEIRUT – Syrian state TV says pro-government forces will begin entering the Syrian Kurdish enclave of Afrin in the country’s northwest “within hours.”

The TV gave no further details about the deployment of the troops, known as “popular forces,” which comes amid reports that an agreement has been reached between the Syrian government and the main Syrian Kurdish militia in control of the area.

The agreement may prompt Turkey to pull out its forces and end a month-long air and ground offensive that aims to oust the Syrian Kurdish militia known as the People’s Protection Units, or YPG, from the border enclave.

The deployment would bring Syrian troops closer to the border with Turkey.

As if this isn’t bad enough, we have Turkey’s response to this Syrian military deployment.

Turkey warns as Syrian government poised to enter Afrin

By Zeina Karam and Bassem Mroue, Associated Press
BEIRUT — February 19, 2018, 12:19 PM ET

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, give a press conference in Amman, Jordan, Monday, February 19, 2018. Cavusoglu said his country is ready to battle Syrian government troops if they enter an enclave in northern Syria to protect Syrian Kurdish fighters. Syrian state media said pro-Syrian government forces will begin entering the Afrin enclave “within hours,” after reaching an agreement with the Kurdish militia in control of the region.

Turkey warned the Syrian government Monday against entering the Kurdish-controlled enclave in northern Syria where a major Turkish military offensive is underway, saying it would hit back at the troops if their goal is to protect the Kurdish fighters.

The warning sets up a potential clash between Turkish troops and Syrian government forces backed by Russia and Iran, whose deployment would be a first step toward restoring President Bashar Assad’s presence along the border with Turkey.

The warning by the Turkish foreign minister came shortly after Syrian state media said pro-government forces would enter Afrin “within hours” to “bolster” local forces in confronting Turkey’s “aggression” after reaching an agreement with the Kurdish militia known as the People’s Protection Units, or YPG, which controls Afrin.

Details of the deal were not announced by either side, and Kurdish officials said talks were still underway. By nightfall, no troops had entered Afrin.

Assad’s troops have had no presence in Afrin since they pulled out of most of northern Syria in 2012, as nation-wide protests against Assad transformed into a civil war. A return to the area, where a potent mix of regional and international powers have boots on the ground, could further complicate the situation and lead to unwanted confrontations.

But depending on the details of the agreement, it may also serve to defuse the situation in Afrin, where Turkey has been struggling to achieve results in its now monthlong offensive to push back YPG fighters from its borders.

Ankara considers the YPG a “terrorist group” linked to the Kurdish insurgency within Turkey’s borders. On Jan. 20, it launched a major air and ground offensive, pounding the enclave with airstrikes and artillery on a daily basis.

Turkey’s foreign minister, speaking at a news conference in Amman, Jordan, said Turkey would have no problem if Syrian government forces were entering Afrin to clear the area from YPG fighters, but that it would strike back if it turns out the deployment was meant to shore up the Kurds against Turkey.

“If the regime is entering to protect the YPG, then no one can stop us, stop Turkey or the Turkish soldiers,” Mevlut Cavusoglu said.

Turkey has supported rebels fighting to overthrow Assad throughout the seven-year civil war, but in recent years has focused more on trying to contain the Kurds. Government troops deployed along its borders, at this point, may be more palatable for Ankara than the continued presence of the powerful YPG.

The group has received weapons and training from the U.S. for years and has been Washington’s main partner in the war against the Islamic State group in Syria.

It was not clear who, exactly, would enter Afrin. Syria’s state-run news agency, SANA, said pro-government fighters known as “popular forces” would deploy to the area.

“The popular forces joining the resistance against Turkish occupation in Afrin comes in the framework of supporting residents as well as defending Syria and its sovereignty,” SANA said. It added that the deployment aims to “frustrate attempts by Erdogan’s regime and its mercenaries of terrorist organizations to occupy the area,” referring to Turkish-backed Syrian insurgents.

A Syrian Kurdish official told The Associated Press that the Syrian forces will enter Afrin from the Shiite villages of Nubul and Zahraa in Aleppo province.

“The army will deploy in several border areas in coordination with the People’s Protection Units and the Syrian Democratic Forces,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to reveal details of the agreement.

“The army will set up military positions in the border area and the agreement is that the Syrian army and the YPG will defend Syria together,” the official said.
The Syrian Democratic Forces are a U.S.-allied group led by the YPG that has won a series of major victories against the Islamic State group in Syria.

The Syrian government and Kurdish fighters have clashed on occasion, and Assad technically opposes the Kurds’ demands for autonomy. But they have also indirectly worked together in the past, and Turkey represents a common enemy.

Turkish officials said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, during which the two discussed Turkey’s military offensive in Afrin. The Turkish officials detailed the call on condition of anonymity in line with government regulations, and did not mention an agreement for government troops to enter Afrin.

Turkish troops and allied Syrian opposition fighters meanwhile continued to pound villages in the enclave with artillery, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Syria’s state media.

The Observatory said Monday’s shelling by Turkish troops killed three people, including a child, and that others were wounded.

Turkey’s private Haberturk newspaper said the Syrian government forces were expected to deploy to four locations in the next two days and 52 locations within the week. The paper claimed that under the deal, the YPG had agreed to hand over heavy weapons it holds. The paper did not provide a source for the report.

The Kurdish official told the AP that the reports about the YPG handing over their weapons are “totally untrue.”

Elsewhere in Syria, government shelling of the rebel-held eastern suburbs of Damascus killed at least 30 people, according to opposition activists and paramedics.

The besieged region known as eastern Ghouta has been subjected to weekslong bombardment that has killed and wounded hundreds of people. Opposition activists say government forces have brought in reinforcements in preparation for a wide offensive on the last main rebel stronghold near the capital.

The Observatory said Monday’s airstrikes and shelling killed 44 people. The Syrian Civil Defense, volunteer first responders known as the White Helmets, said 30 people were killed in eastern Ghouta.

Syrian state TV reported that rebels, in return, fired dozens of mortar rounds and rockets at Damascus, wounding eight people.
