It now appears the ongoing California water crisis will be played out more slowly than I first thought it would. The flooding won’t be from the catastrophic failure of the main spillway at Lake Oroville, or the collapse of the Mount Shasta dam spillway. Instead, the damage will come from sustained spillway releases over a 14 to 21 day period starting as early as March 3rd, 2017. It is a fact that the snowpack totals for Oregon and California are at historic, and indeed Biblical levels, of between 150 and 200 percent of normal. The snowpack will melt. If it melts rapidly due to warm temperatures, like the warm ones predicted for the first week or so of March, then that water will flow into dams and reservoirs that are already, in many cases, over 90 plus percent full. The spillways will have to keep spilling water, and that water will flow downstream, impacting dikes that are already saturated, near overtopping, and will be breached. I am not sure if we are facing a repeat of the Great Flood of 1861 in California. We shall see.
